This post will talk about exactly what the title says: How Facebook can develop to eventually rule the world (world in this case being the Internet). I will get right into my ideas on how Facebook can come to be the one and only site you will ever need to visit.
Let’s start with the statistics: Facebook has more than 500 million active users, 50% of these log in on any given day. An average user has about 130 friends and people spend approximately 700 billion minutes on Facebook per month.
From this we can tell that a lot of people are already spending a significant amount of time on Facebook, why not make their life easier and integrate a few crucial pieces in to Facebook to make it even more attractive to users.
Idea 1 – Facebook Marketplace
Facebook should consider developing a marketplace in the same fashion as eBay. If Facebook added auction functionality to their platform users could sell and buy items right on Facebook. By adding an option users could choose if they wanted to post their latest purchase on their wall to share with their friends. It is crucial to make this an option because not all users want to share what they have just purchased, like if you buy something for someone else and you don’t want that person to find out. The same goes for selling items. When you put up a new item for auction you can share with your friends that this particular item is now for sale. The option to share or not to share should be available here too. A marketplace operated by Facebook would increase not only user activity, but also revenue for Facebook as they would, just like eBay, charge for listings, or maybe charge a percentage of the sale.
Idea 2 – Apartment listings
There are a lot of people looking for apartments, and there are also a whole bunch of website where apartments can be found/listed. Why not bring all the available apartments to one place. A place that has over 500 million users. Facebook was initially founded for college kids and college students are still a big part of the users on Facebook. These college kids will at some point look for their own place to live, either in college or after graduation. If Facebook developed some kind of inventory system and got landlords to sign up, then an apartment search functionality could be added to Facebook. Just like with the marketplace this would bring extra revenue and more attraction to users for Facebook. Even rental houses, like vacation rentals could be listed in this function. If a user sees a friend is going to a vacation somewhere and realizes that he/she wants to go there too, then this user could go in to the listings and find out how much a week would cost them at that location and also browse the available properties.
These are two ideas that just popped into my head without much thinking. I am sure there are more ideas that could improve Facebook and make their dominance even greater.
What do you think? Are these good ideas for Facebook, would you use any of them, or can you come up with other/better ideas?
